The city will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of Phase I of the reconstruction of Cumberland Avenue at 4 p.m. Jan. 6.
The event, which will be hosted by Mayor Madeline Rogero, City Councilman Nick Pavlis and other Council members, will take place in the grassy area just north of the Three Rivers Rambler depot, 2560 University Commons Way; parking available in the lot south of the depot.
Phase I of the reconstruction of Cumberland Avenue, between the Alcoa Highway ramps and 22nd Street, has ended – on time and under budget. Improving traffic flow was a key objective of the Phase I work. Synchronized traffic flow at Metron Center Way and a dedicated turn lane onto northbound Alcoa Highway have lessened decades-long issues with congestion.
Phase II work is underway in the section of Cumberland Avenue between 22nd and 17th streets. Scheduled to be completed in August 2017, the reconstruction will change the existing four-lane street on the eastern end of the corridor to a three-lane cross section with a raised median and left-turn lanes at intersections.
In both the Phase I and Phase II work, Cumberland Avenue sidewalks are being widened, and utility infrastructure relocated and upgraded, to create a more attractive, safer, pedestrian-friendly corridor.

'State of South Knoxville' meet set
Forget the "State of the State" address. Who cares about the "State of the Schools." They got nothing on . . . duh, duh, duh . . .
The. State. Of. South. Knoxville.
Heh.
Area representatives from the County Commission (Mike Brown), City Council (Nick Pavlis) and School Board (Amber Rountree) will host a community forum from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Feb. 26 at 115 Flenniken Avenue. Danny Gray, of the South Woodlawn neighborhood, will serve as moderator.
“This is the first time that we have brought city, county, and schools together for a forum to have community questions and input from our district, and I hope many of our constituents take the time to come out for a chat," Brown said in a released statement. "It is near budget time for all three entities, so come on out and tell us what you think. You have three elected leaders who work well together and hopefully we all work together to make 'South' grow in the right direction.”
Said Vice Mayor Nick Pavlis: “I am really excited to continue to bring government to the people. This is an awesome opportunity for our constituents to hear our vision for the district and to ask us questions about what matters to them most.”
Rountree added: “South Knox is all about community. In order for our community to flourish, we must all work together on the same team. I'm thrilled to be a part of the 'State of South Knox' meeting with Vice Mayor Pavlis and Commissioner Brown, as we take this opportunity to hear from the community about how we can join together to make South Knox even better.”

7 local leaders compete to kiss pig
Oh man, this is brilliant. To raise money for the American Diabetes Association, seven local elected officials have agreed to participate in the "Kiss-a-Pig" online fundraiser.
Names? Of course.
Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett, state Sen. Stacey Campfield, Knox County Commissioner Richard Briggs, commission Chairman Tony Norman, Knoxville Vice Mayor Nick Pavlis, Knoxville Councilman Nick Della Volpe and state Rep. Joe Armstrong.
According to a release issued by Moxley Carmichael (hey, they're doing it for free, so they get the plug), whichever participant raises the most money gets to kiss the pig. Yeah, somehow winning doesn't sound like such a great idea. Heh.
The contest is apparently, the first ever citywide event like this and is hosted by the KCDC Wellness Warriors, which will benefit the ADA's "Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes" event on Oct. 20.
So, head on over to - click right smack here - and vote online through July 28. (One dollar donations equals one vote.)
Then, come to the reception from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on July 29 to see the winning candidate pucker up and kiss the pig.

South Knox businesses to get help
Looks like the city side of the Knox County Death Star has taken some initiative to help South Knoxville. Yesterday, city Mayor Madeline Rogero and Vice Mayor Nick Pavlis said the city and county will each contribute up to $20,000 to support marketing efforts for the area.
The announcement was made during an afternoon press conference in front of the Disc Exchange n Chapman Highway. Ed Marcum with the story right smack here.
This is great news for the town's red-headed stepchild, although I'm not sure why they need to spend $40,000 on marketing when the city already pays (at least) roughly $300,000 in salaries and benefits for a PR and marketing team/communication department, and the county has the one-man team of Michael Big Sexy" Grider.
There's probably an answer. I'm sure they're super busy. Heh.
